WWII Re-enactment Group

Comparative Rank Chart for the different services.

It seems many re-enactors are uncertain about the comparative ranks for the different serivces, so here is a chart relating to British ranks. Hopefully as time goes by it will get refined and added to.

Please note these ranks are based on Wartime (1940's) usage and may not be current today. For example a lance-Corporal was an appointment during the war and was only made a substantive rank in the early 1960's.

It is interesting to note the wartime spelling of "Serjeant" with a "j" differs from the modern spelling with a "g".

Note 1: An Able Seaman is senior to an Ordinary Seaman

Note 2: Leading Aircraftman is senior to a First class Aircraftman who is senior to a Second class Aircraftman

Note 3: Naval Warrant officers are senior to the Army rank (Royal Marines rank is equivalent to the Naval one)

Note 4: A Naval Midshipman is junior to an Army Warrant Officer

Commissioned Officers of the Royal Marines will rank, according to senority, with officers of the Army of the same titles.
